I design one-of-a-kind products using ebru (marbling), a Turkish art form. Marbling is a process in which paints float on a water solution called a size. I create a design on top of the water, then I capture the design on to treated products. Depending on the products’ texture, they are either cured or glazed so that the design’s integrity is protected for years to come.
I have always been a person who loved to create, even though my long-term career was in technology and education. After my daughter moved out for college, I took over her bedroom as my art studio because I had always used converted closets or small utility rooms as my space to create. Everyone kept telling me I needed to start a blog so they could see all my creations, so I ran a craft blog for several years. I enjoyed creating my crafts in my new space--mosaics, jewelry, sewing, etc. But while ‘surfing to create’ one day, I ran across marbling and I was completely mesmerized as I watched the paints float on top of the water.
I studied under a well-known artist and soon I was producing products that really caught the attention of my customers. Still working my full-time job, I was marbling into the early morning hours to meet the demand. My studio expanded from my daughter’s revamped art room to me taking over the whole downstairs, with mounds of plastic on top of our pool table located in the playroom. No more pool playing at our house!
In 2020, I retired from my fulltime tech career to concentrate on expanding allmymarbles. I am adding lots of new products that have been rolling around in my head since I started marbling. I never had the time to develop them when I was running the studio part time.
Not only are my products hand marbled by me, but each product is unique. Each design is not like the last and won’t be like the next one. No one will have a product like yours! Also, they are all either cured or glazed so that the unique design integrity is protected. The 100% silk scarves will become softer and softer after every delicate wash too!
As every artist who owns a business knows, running your business isn’t just creating. There are so many other things to manage, like marketing. This is where my tech side comes in handy. I really look forward to creating my marketing pieces for my social media accounts. From creating videos to pulling creative props together, marketing and social media is almost as fun as creating the product itself.
Another thing that’s interesting about me is, I started my allmymarbles business at age 60! You are “NEVER too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream,” as C. S. Lewis stated of seniors. This is a quote I have lived by for a while now. And I don’t intend to stop dreaming any time soon!
